A family fractured by modern life. A girl on the cusp of maturity. Can a dying relative bring this family closer together?
When Emma, young and with a touch of attitude, finds herself looking after her dying grandmother at her house in the Blue Mountains, she doesn’t expect to enjoy it.
But when her grandmother reminisces about the time she served in army hospitals during the war, reliving her fondest and saddest memories, she confides in Emma about the love she found there and the sadness of death.
Emma finds herself drawn into life in another time as seen through her grandmother’s vivid recollections of the darkest days in Australia’s history.
Listening to her grandmother’s tales from the war Emma draws comparisons with her own life. She learns a lot about friendships, life and death and love.
When her grandmother dies, Emma and her mother Julia find that coming to terms with their grief brings them closer to reveal the deep love they have for each other.
Through this experience Emma matures from a teenager into a young woman.
The story is set in present day Australia and in the Pacific during the war in the 1940’s.
